Image/Text analysis of Zombiebmx.com

zombiebmx.com/blog

Zombiebmx.com is a blog and forum BMX website that comes out of New Zealand. Its purpose? To keep the New Zealand BMX culture up to date with what’s happening in the local riding scene. The home page of zombie is their blog, most days there are one or two new entries. These rang from short videos, photos, local riding articles, interviews, advertisements for up and coming competitions and events and anything else that is necessary for a website about BMX.

The layout of the page is headed with a large, bold font title of the website which looks as if it has had paint spattered against it. This feature is there to incorporate the street culture of BMX into the site. The title is centred and occupies three quarters of the width of the page, all of the web posts run vertically down the page inside the parameter of the title. Underneath the title are the words “Blog  Features  Gallery  Forum  Contact”  These are all in capital letters, size 27 and font in Verdana. Because of how close these are to the title of the page your eyes are not drawn to read it, you pass it off as a probable slogan. Also, directly under feature titles of the site are the entries of the bog and to the right of the blog the most recent and interesting article of the site. These are title as the “latest features” and the have the same colour and style as the main title of the site, this title how ever is sized 27, the same as the other subtitles.
.
This section occupies one third of the space under the title. Under the latest features there is an oblong image of what the article contains, this is the first section of the site that you are drawn to because the title is the same font and colour as the title of the website (the first thing that jumps of the page at the reader when it opens), it is not necessarily because you initially read the title. This is the first part of the site that the reader will fully read through in order to see weather there is anything of interest for them in this section. If there is nothing of interest for the read, the next section of the page that draws the eye is the blog entries. These occupy two thirds of the space under the title. Each blog entry is separated by a thick black line and titled with Arial font, size 20, italic words. It is not the title that draws the eye to this section, it is the large image or video window that sits under the title. Once the readers eye has been drawn to a particular article in the blog by the image, they will then notice that there is a small paragraph/caption at the top or bottom of the image explaining what the article or video contains. If the image that is being looked a is a video window, then a simple click in the centre of the window will begin loading a play the video. If the image is a picture suggesting or explaining what the article contains, clicking the image will only enlarge it not open the article. However, the reader then notice a button, underlined and in larger font than that of the caption about the article located at the very bottom right of that blog entry, under the image or the caption depending on which comes first.

“New Staff At Zombie Bmx: T.White

Looks like Mike Z finally lost his mind and added me as a contributor to ZombieBmx. So for the first post on my 31st birthday and to celebrate 17 years of BMX I thought some old school photos of some legendary spots.

Above is a recent article posted on the zombie blog telling the readers that Tim White, one of the prominent BMX figures in New Zealand is now writing for zombiebmx.com. Your eye is drawn to the this article because of the photograph of time, his bike and a beer in hand. The image reflects the laid pack “chilled out” culture that surrounds BMX riding. The witty caption above draws the reader into reading further into the article to check out the images that have been posted with it.  The third and final feature of the home page is located under the “latest features” section and to the right of the main blog entries, it is the “supporters” columns. The title is in the same font, size and colour of the “latest features”. Under this there is a list of the websites that support zombiebmx.com. Below title there are a rectangular images that switch between a photograph and the name of the website, these images are also links.
The zombiebmx.com homepage works very well to draw the reader further into the sight, with headings, imagery and captions that appeal to the audience of New Zealand BMX riders. A range of articles and videos that cover the goings on and progression of the sport in New Zealand too keep the readers satisfied. It is over all a well put together website visually and textually.
